Description

Millard Fillmore Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 10", "House of Rep. [Washington]," June 4, 1842, to Secretary of the Navy Abel P. Upshur. Here Fillmore is writing regarding the application of "...my very young friend, Theodore S. Bosworth, who is an applicant for the office of midshipman..." Fillmore tries to use some political clout to arrange an appointment for the young man: "I know not by what rule these selections are made but I beg leave to say that I am not aware that there has ever been an appointment from my district, and I hope that fact will not be overlooked in making any future selections." Small smudge under Fillmore's signature, but not affecting the text. Few scattered spots of foxing.
