Description

Millard Fillmore Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8 x 10 inches, Buffalo, New York; June 27, 1849. A letter to Secretary of State John M. Clayton, in which Fillmore recommends Robert Thompson be appointed "bearer of dispatches or Great Britain or the continent...I take great pleasure in saying that he is a gentleman of high character." Signed, "Millard Fillmore" during his term as Vice President. Includes a certificate of authenticity from RR Auction.

Includes two engravings of Fillmore. The first, published by Johnson, Fry & Co, measuring 7 3/4 x 10 7/8 inches. The second, engraved by Phillibrown & Jones, hand-colored, measuring 8 7/8 x 11 inches; affixed to a cardstock mount to an overall size of 11 x 14 inches.

Condition: Letter lightly toned with flattened folds; remnants of previous binding at left edge; a touch of soiling to bottom right corner. Engravings lightly toned.
