Description

Mary Todd Lincoln: Autographed Letter Signed. 4 ½" x 7" letter on personal mourning stationery, 3 pp., Lake George, August 20, 1864, written to Mr. Orvis (manager, we believe, of the Equinox House in Manchester, Vermont). The First Lady talks about her impending visit to the resort hotel: "... My son Robert & Taddie accompany me, as well as our servant Charles. R_ will remain with me a day or two, at Manchester & is compelled to return to W_ to see his Father. In consequence of being left alone, & if it is not too much trouble, may I ask to be allowed to take my quiet meals alone in my little parlor. I will try to give as little trouble as possible... [signed] Mrs. A. Lincoln." A fine letter from the Presidential years. Sold with an 1862 Brady CDV of Mrs. Lincoln and a photocopy of the Equinox Hotel register for August 23, 1864, listing the Lincolns as guests.
