Description

Still grieving the death of her husband, Mary Lincoln writes: "... I felt that the precious blood of my husband should be avenged..."

Mary Todd Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed with Transmittal Cover with Franking Signature. Four pages on mourning letterhead, 4.75" x 7.25". Racine, Wisconsin; July 13, 1867. A letter to Mrs. Edward Fowler, a neighbor and mother of a playmate of Tad's. She invites Mrs. Fowler to Racine, and includes news of the trial of Jefferson Davis gleaned from son Robert. In part: "You have doubtless been so occupied with your daughter's sick child, that I am sure you are not aware that several days have elapsed, since we parted. I have, in the meantime, frequently thought of you and am feeling anxious to learn the state of the child... Robert writes me, that they are compelled to remain by the counsel. As evidence is now going, I consider the trial is but a farce. And Senate like his Master Spirit Jeff Davis will be acquitted and laughs in the face of the country. Such is the land of injustice. I long to leave it - For I felt that the precious blood of my husband should be avenged..." She continues the letter vertically across the top margin of the first page, and signs with her initials, "M.L."

Together with the original transmittal envelope, with "Mary Lincoln" franking signature.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds and light toning. The envelope has heavy wear, with paper loss in several areas, but no affecting the franking signature.
