Description

Mary Todd Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed with Transmittal Cover with Franking Signature. Two pages on mourning letterhead, 4.75" x 7.25"; Racine, [Wisconsin]; July 2 (no year, but possibly 1867). A letter to Emma Fowler, a neighbor and mother of one of Tad's playmates in Chicago. Mary is writing from a spa, asking her neighbor for a favor: "Mr. Chambers will call on Thursday, for the keys, to show a gentleman the furniture, you will let him have them & Henry after he is through can try the front doors - Will H. see if the old man waters the grass in yard outside by the large tree..." Signed "Mary Lincoln." This letter, along with the letter offered as lot 49130 in this auction, was obtained from a direct descendant of Mrs. Fowler more than 20 years ago, and is offered here for the first time at auction.


Condition: Usual mail folds, and toning. Ink smear occurring at next to last line of letter affecting a single word. Transmittal cover has heavy wear and soiling. It has been torn open at the left. With scraping to surface and bumped corners.
