Description

Martin Van Buren Military Appointment Signed. One partially printed page on vellum, 13 ¾ x 16 ¾ inches; Washington; March 5, 1839. Document states "William Shuttleworth, with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corp." Signed "M. Van Buren" as President and countersigned by J.K. Paulding as Secretary of the Navy. Patriotic and military vignettes at top and bottom, with a seal affixed at the center of the bottom vignette. Lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Beckett.

Condition: Creasing along folds, with two small pinholes along center fold, not affecting text. Stain and crease at bottom left corner over the filing docket but does not affect any legibility. Some corner wear, and a few scattered stains. Seal is still intact with light edge wear and a tear halfway down the center.
