Description

Martin Van Buren Autograph Letter Signed "M. V. Buren" as the attorney general of New York as well as a New York state senator. Two pages, 8" x 10", n. p. [Albany], March 11, 1819, to John McCarthy asking for his support for Charles E. Dudley (a Democratic-Republican) in the upcoming State Senate election. He writes, in part: "The Republicans of this city are anxious to obtain for Mr. Dudley strong support in the County....my acquaintance with your family & my knowledge of their general devotion to the Republican cause is such as to leave no doubt that your support would be acceptable to the republicans of this City..." Dudley was elected to the State Senate that year. Toned edges are chipped in places. Few spots of foxing.
