Description
Lincoln pardons a union soldier sentenced to deathAbraham Lincoln (1809-1865) President, unusual manuscript Document Signed, A. Lincoln" as President, one page, 7.75" x 9.75", "War Department", Washington, April 1, 1863 with the body of the text in the hand of and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (1814-1869). An order to pardon "...John A Brown under Sentence of death by [illeg.] of a Court Marshal at Indianapolis..." and directing that he be "...absolved from Sentence aforesaid; an hat he be released from imprisonment and discharged from the Service of the United States..." An unusual manuscript accomplished by Stanton in an evidently hurried manner, likely due to the critical nature of avoiding the execution. Very light soiling and light dampstains, folds reinforced with archival tape on verso, else very good condition. Lincoln pardons seldom come to market -- this, prepared by Stanton, is an unusual and desirable rarity. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
