Description

John Tyler Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 8" x 10"; "Villa Margaret near Hampton"; June 11, 1859. Penciled notations on the verso indicate the recipient was B.B. French, a Washington attorney. A letter giving an account of an appropriation of $10,000 for the conversion of a jail into a lunatic asylum during his administration. In part: "My instructions to Major Noland were emphatic to restrain the expenditure within the appropriation. I remember that Mr. Skirving furnished the plan of change, but my impression is strong that he did so gratuitously at the request of the Commissioners, or that there was an understanding between them that he was to look exclusively for compensation to the contingency of a balance remaining unexpended upon the completion of the building. Hence I infer from his statement that no application was made for compensation until after the building was completed, when the information was given him by Major Noland of the balance on hand being $14 - The work was put out at contract and Mr. Queen became the contractor..." Signed, "John Tyler."

Condition: Gently toned with a few stray spots of foxing. Tiny tear and creasing along right margin, with flattened mail folds. Pencil annotations on verso.
