Description

John Quincy Adams Signed Land Grant. One partially printed page, 14" x 9", Washington; May 20, 1828. Certificate granting Benjamin Butt a parcel land in the Military District in Ohio. Signed, "J. Q. Adams" and countersigned by the Commissioner of the U.S. Land Office, George A. Graham. Matted and framed with a decorative plaque to an overall size of 22.5" x 24.25".

Between 1798 and 1821, Congress authorized the sale of any remaining public lands in Ohio to private owners in an effort to populate the area. Known as "Congress Lands," these territories were divided into carefully surveyed grids and allotted to individual applicants. As one of the first settled territories in the Midwest, Ohio functioned as an important political and economic asset to the rapidly growing United States.

Condition: Creased along folds and toned throughout. Staining to the bottom, right, and top margins. Seal intact.
