Description

John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 6 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches, "United States Senate," Washington, D.C.; January 15, 1955. A letter to Marian and Jim Fitzgerald, thanking the couple for their Christmas card and telling them: "I hope to be back to work in the not too distant future and look forward to seeing you some time soon." Signed, "Jack." With postscript reading "many thanks," in blue ballpoint pen.

JFK wrote this letter while recovering from his third spinal surgery. The procedure involved attaching a metal plate to his spine and fusing the vertebrae in an effort to relieve his chronic and debilitating back pain. Unfortunately, the surgical site became severely infected; Kennedy's close friend and confidant, LeMoyne Billings, later described it as "an open wound that seemed to be infected all the time. And now and then a piece of bone would come out of the wound. His pain was excruciating." Kennedy underwent a fourth surgery on February 10, 1955, to remove the plate, and received injections to treat his pain throughout the rest of his life.

With PSA letter of authenticity.

Condition: Lightly toned with smoothed folds. A few very light stains and stray creasing.
