Description

John F. Kennedy: Two Autograph Notes. One on From the Desk of John F. Kennedy imprinted stationery and one on a yellow notecard, 4" x 5.25" and 5" x 3", respectively, Washington; April 12 - 13, 1962. Two notes written by the President while attempting to resolve the 1962 steel price dispute. The first was written while in a meeting with Arthur Goldberg, Secretary of Labor, asking him to fly to New York to talk with U.S. Steel Finance Chairman Robert Tyson. He writes, "Tyson - Goldberg." The second, written on the back of a note given to him by his personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, refers to Inland Steel Company of Chicago's announcement that they would not raise prices. The note reads, in full, "Lee Bloch Inland Steel / Edgar Kaiser / Edgar." The notes are accompanied by a typed statement dictated to Lincoln by Edgar Kaiser, President of U.S. Steel and a letter of provenance from Lincoln providing further contextualization.

In the spring of 1962, the United Steelworkers of America fought to renegotiate contracts with the nation's major steel companies. Amidst the negotiations, the Kennedy administration urged workers to decrease their wage demands. In turn, the steel companies agreed not to raise the prices of steel so as not to affect payments and anti-inflation efforts. However, the day after the last major steel contract was signed, U.S. Steel announced that it would, in fact, be raising its price of steel. Kennedy, unhappy that the company had seemingly reneged on its promise, worked to resolve the crisis on April 12 and April 13, 1962.

Lincoln writes, in part, "Many meetings and conferences, plus telephone calls, took place on that day and the next two days. On April 12, 1962 Kennedy asked Arthur Goldberg, Secretary of Labor, to fly to New York to talk to U.S. Steel Finance Chairman Robert Tyson...On April 13, 1962 officials of the Inland Steel Company of Chicago...announced that they would not raise prices...Kennedy called Edgar Kaiser, President of U.S. Steel."

Condition: Both notes are lightly toned but otherwise fine.
