Description

"I am Extremely Sorry about your loss. Your Son was on a Most Important Mission. J.K."

John F. Kennedy: Draft of Condolence Letter Signed. One page, 6.75 x 8.75 inches. Washington, [D.C.], October 28, 1962. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Rudolf Anderson, the parents of the only pilot killed during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Major Rudolph Anderson, Jr., a U-2 pilot, was shot down and killed over Cuba on October 27, 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Kennedy conveys his heartfelt praise for their son's service and dedication to the country, adding a postscript in his own hand which reads, "I am extremely sorry about your great loss. Your son was on a most important mission. J.K."

Anderson was killed when his U-2 spy plane was shot down during one of his six reconnaissance missions over Cuba. Fearing that any retaliatory measures would result in an all-out war, President Kennedy sent Robert Kennedy to meet with Soviet Ambassador Dobrynin with a proposed, top-secret peace deal. The U.S. would withdraw its nuclear missiles from Turkey and not invade Cuba, on the condition that the Soviets would pull out their nuclear weapons from Cuba. With this agreement, the tensest moments of the Cuban Missile Crisis came to an end, with only one casualty, that of Major Rudolph Anderson, Jr.

Condition: Light, central horizontal fold line; else, excellent.
