Description

John Adams Signed Four Languages Ship's Passport. Single sheet,17 ½ x 14 ¾ inches (sight); no place, February 26, 1798. Full four-languages ship's passport issued to "Arthur Smith of Baltimore, master or commander of the Schooner called Sisters of the burthen of fifty four tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of Baltimore bound for Hispaniola and laden with flour, Beef, Pork, cheese, candles, lard, salt Bacon, vermicelly & preserved fowls." Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. With blind embossed paper seal at left intact. Matted and framed with an engraving of Adams to an overall size of 33 ¼ x 22 ¼ inches. Accompanied by a letter of authentication from PSA/DNA.

Condition: Flattened folds, with light wear. A fold runs horizontally across the top of Adams' signature. Darker area of toning at lower left corner, and with a few stray ink stains. Two intersecting tears have been repaired at lower right corner. Two small punctures and tears at lower left. Not examined out of the frame.
