Description

John Adams Military Appointment Signed as president. One vellum partly-printed page, 15" x 13.5", Washington, February 20, 1801, appointing Robert Gray "a Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Artillerists & Engineers in the Service of the United States." Some ink has faded, but Adams' large, neat signature stands out boldly on the toned page. A large blind-embossed seal rests in the upper left corner. Folds with some bleedthrough in the lower margin from spilt ink on the verso, slightly affecting the signature of Samuel Dexter, the acting Secretary of War.
