Description

John Adams Land Grant Signed. One partially printed page, 11 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches (sight), Philadelphia, March 16, 1798. A land grant awarding Lieutenant Colonel William Nelson eight hundred and eighty acres of land for his service during the Revolutionary War. In part it reads: "Know ye, that, in consideration of military service performed by William Nelson (a Lieutenant Colonel for three years) to the United States, in the Virginia line on the Continental Establishment, and in pursuance of an Act of the Congress of the United States passed on the 10th day of August in the year 1790, entitled 'An Act to enable Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment to obtain titles to certain lands lying north-west of the River Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota.'" Signed, "John Adams" and countersigned by Timothy Pickering. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17 1/4 x 21 1/4 inches.

William Nelson (1746-1807) served during the American Revolution and participated in both the battles of Monmouth and Brandywine. In 1781, Nelson was present at the Siege of Yorktown where he held the rank of Colonel of Infantry for the American army.

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Visible flattened folds, stray staining and soiling. Three punctures along left margin. Pencil notations along top margin. Document has shifted and is misaligned in mat.
