Description
Jimmy Carter Autograph Letter Signed. One page on his personal letterhead, 6 3/8 x 8 1/2 inches; [Georgia]; October 5, 1991. The former President writes to Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward reflecting on a recent visit and current project: "I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to your home, and look forward to an opportunity to continue our discussion. We've decided to go ahead with our Atlanta project, which I mentioned briefly. This will pull together almost all major domestic issues into one bold effort in a major city... Best wishes, & thanks for your help – Jimmy Carter."The "Atlanta project" mentioned in this letter is no doubt The Atlanta Project (TAP) launched the following year under the auspices of The Carter Center. TAP sought to mobilize civic, religious, corporate, and community resources to tackle issues such as healthcare access, housing, education, and economic development in underserved neighborhoods.
Although we could not find confirmation that Newman and Woodward made a donation to the project at the time of this letter, a September 3, 1996 ALS by Carter (sold at RR Auction in 2024) thanks Newman for a gift from Newman's foundation to the Carter Center, suggesting the two organizations had an established relationship.
Condition: Single mail fold at center; with small separation thereat which has been reinforced with tape on verso.
