Description

Jimmy Carter Autograph Letter Signed "Jimmy Carter". One page, 6.75" x 9", Washington, D.C.; May 12, 1977. A letter addressed to Peter Rodino, written in black ink on White House letterhead, in which Carter is thanking Rodino for his public service. Although he does not explicitly reference Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal, Carter is likely referring to Rodino's oversight role during the proceedings. It reads, in full:

"I think often of the great contribution you made to the preservation of our system of government during the recent trying times for our republic. Your competence and integrity are an inspiration to all of us who love America. As President, I want to thank you."

Peter Rodino (1909-2005) was a Democratic congressional representative from New Jersey, who was later elected chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and was a key player in overseeing the impeachment of Nixon in 1974. Nixon resigned as President of the United States on August 9, 1974. Following Gerald Ford's term, Jimmy Carter came to the presidency with a mind to restore stability within the country and to renew the public's faith in the Commander in Chief. Peter Rodino was even considered as a possible running mate for Carter in 1976.

Condition: Flattened mail fold, with faint toning around the edges.
