Description

James Monroe Autograph Letter Signed "Jas. Monroe." Three pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.5", Alexandria; January 4, 1807. Addressed to Colonel Hugh Mercer, the letter discusses Monroe's opinions on running for office. Monroe had been appointed Ambassador to Great Britain in 1803 and had negotiated the Monroe-Pinkney Treaty that would have extended the Jay Treaty. However, this treaty was refused by Thomas Jefferson, and a bitter Monroe returned home to Virginia. Many urged Monroe to run in the 1808 presidential election, but fearing Jefferson's anger, Monroe only agreed to accept a nomination if made by a draft effort. He would not actively campaign. In his letter he explains:

"...I shall pursue a course, consistent with my principles, by resuming my station at the bar -, I take up the direction of my private concerns, wh. have been injured by my absence. I am a candidate for no office, nor would I promote the acquirement of any, in the gift of my generous countrymen, were I sure to succeed, by any effort direct or indirect of my own. If I am left at the bar, - I shall be in my proper station, in that to wh. I was directed, and which I voluntarily resumed after a long course of publick service. If I am taken from it, it will be by the act of my country, & by it only. In the meantime I shall be independent, enjoying the rights of a free citizen, & the repose which my mind requires & will cherish...Mrs. Monroe & our daughters will be happy to hear of Mrs. Mercer & your family..." The last page of the bifolium has been tipped into a slightly larger page, measuring 8" x 10.25".

Condition: Flattened mail folds with light toning and minor foxing and dampstaining. Boldly signed by Monroe.
