Description
James Madison Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed as president and countersigned by James Monroe as secretary of state. One partially-printed vellum page, 10.5" x 15", [Washington], July 3, 1815. Numbered "28," the passport allows "...the Ship Ajax... James T. Trott master or commander, of the burthen of three hundred eighteen tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with fifteen men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance seizure or molestation." Madison's signature is slightly faded, but Monroe's is still bold. With maritime vignettes at the top of the document; paper seal is missing with scratching where it was previously. Docketing on the verso. Moderate to heavy toning with smoothed folds.Auction Info
