Description
James Madison and James Monroe Letter of Marque Signed. One partially-printed page, 15.5" x 12" (sight), Washington, July 28, 1812, authorizing the "private armed Schooner called the Squando[?] of the burthen of fifteen 67/95th tons, or thereabouts, owned by Joseph Ela, Nath. Dearborn, Daniel Ladd, Josiah Giles, Peter Wilson, Noah Smith, Joseph Wiggins, Nath. Folsom Jr., Tim. Dam, Hall J. Ham & Simson Folsom John Melcher mounting two carriage guns, and navigated by twenty men" to sail as a commissioned privateer to "subdue, seize and take any armed or unarmed British vessel, public or private, which shall be found within the jurisdictional limits of the United States or elsewhere on the high seas, or within the waters of the British dominions." Madison signs as president and Monroe as secretary of state. Original paper seal of the United States at lower left. Signatures of both Madison and Monroe are bold and still bright. Lightly toned along smoothed folds. Matted and framed to an overall size of 24" x 20".During the War of 1812, the United States lacked a standing navy. To remedy this quickly, the government issued letters of marque and reprisal which authorized private ships to attack and seize British ships and their cargo.
