Description

President Buchanan Offers Warm Endorsement to Former French Diplomat Entering Private Business

James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed ("James Buchanan"). One page, 8 x 10 inches; Washington; June 30, 1841.

Buchanan sends his support to the Comte de Menou, former Chargé d'Affaires to the United States, commending his professional and personal deportment. In full:

"My dear Sir,

I rejoice to learn from your letter of the 25th instant that you intend to return to this city and engage in the prosecution of a (business) which promises to be successful. Most sincerely do I hope that I may realize your expectations. From the time when you first made your appearance in this Country until the present moment, whether in an official or private station, your acquaintances have always become your friends. You have been the same man, whether representing France as her charge d'affaires in the United States or in retirement: and your numerous friends will now be gratified to witness the same kind of execution on your part in an honorable private employment which rendered you formerly so useful to your own Government and so acceptable to that of the United States.
