Description

James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8 x 10 inches, Washington, D.C.; November 11, 1847. A letter from Buchanan to Nathaniel Niles, Jr., informing him that he has been appointed charge d'affaires to Sardinia. Marked "Private" in the top margin. Signed, "James Buchanan."

In part: "My predictions when we parted are realised & I am authorised to say that the President, soon after the meeting of the Senate, will nominate you as charge d'affaires to Sardinia. This communication is made so that you may be ready for your departure with as little delay as possible after your appointment."

In 1847, Buchanan was serving as Secretary of State to President James K. Polk. Nathaniel Niles, Jr., son of abolitionist and U.S. Representative of Vermont Nathaniel Niles, served as charge d'affaires to Sardinia from 1848 to 1850.

Condition: Lightly toned with smoothed folds. A few light spots of foxing. Rough left edge where integral page was removed, with a bit of adhesive present, likely from previous mounting. Repaired separation at the right edge, not touching text. Small pencil annotation on the verso.
