Description
ALS as President
James A. Garfield Scarce Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7"; April 8, 1881. A letter to an unnamed "Judge": "I have read the cases referred to in your note. They are very clear & strong. I return the volume of Reports with thanks. Very Truly Yours, J. A. Garfield"Inaugurated as president in March 4, 1881, Garfield served in office less than five months. He was shot by a disgruntled office seeker, Charles Guiteau on July 18, 1881; and died of his wounds on September 19, 1881.
Due to the short time he served in office, Garfield's letters and documents signed as president are quite rare, and his handwritten letters are especially scarce. The last ALS as president sold at auction was in 2002 at Christie's; a two-page letter to Edwards Pierrepont sold for $71,700.
Condition: The letter has a horizontal fold in the center with a small separation thereat along right hand edge. Gently toned, and overall in excellent condition. The letter is accompanied by an oversized reprint of a Garfield photograph.
