Description

Future First Lady Jackie recounts teenage romantic misadventures to her best friend

Jacqueline Kennedy Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages, 5 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches (sight), "Merrywood," McLean, Virginia; [circa 1944-47]. Matted and framed alongside a photograph of Jackie Kennedy to an overall size of 20 x 21 1/2 inches. In a playful, intimate letter signed "Jackie" in bold script, the young Jacqueline Bouvier writes to her best friend, Woodley, from the Merrywood estate in Virginia. She recounts being spurned by a boyfriend—complete with a sketch of his "very queer looking" mother—attempts to pair Woodley with her stepbrother, Yusha, and laughs off the attentions of an "IMPOSSIBLE" suitor she met on vacation.

In part: "Guess what? I saw Ken at the theater in Washington & he really is a big lug – Yusha & I were standing in the lobby & Ken sees us & his face lights up & I smiled at him & he yells 'Hi Yusha – come on over' – & didn't say a word to me & didn't speak to me...I really think he was rude & it made me mad. He was with his mother who is very queer looking – She has an old face & long gray hair & bangs.

Yusha was being very unsociable...He loved your letter & thought it was very witty but he was slaving away at exams & he didn't have time to answer – I think maybe you can get him to like you next summer – I think he thinks you are too old for him – especially with great older men falling in love with you. I had a neat time this vacation but nobody exciting fell in love with me or anything. I had fun squelching Alby who was IMPOSSIBLE – so I don't think he'll write back. He showed my roommate an old letter I wrote him – & told her horrible things about me & told her not to tell me – but of course she did! I think he is the lowest form of male life – but don't tell him!"

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Lightly toned with flattened folds. Dampstaining to page two, rendering some words illegible. Mounting remnants at edges of pages one and four.
