Description

The future First Lady laments her return to Miss Porter’s: "I just cant stand being back here in prison"

Jacqueline Kennedy Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages of a bifolium, 10 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches (sight), "Miss Porter's School, Farmington, Connecticut"; [circa 1944-47]. Matted and framed to an overall size of 18 x 14 inches. A teenaged Jacqueline Bouvier writes to her best friend, Woodley, from Miss Porter's School—or, as Jackie calls it, "prison." Signed "Jackie," this intimate letter captures her mischievous side, as she describes sneaking sherry and listening to music with her boyfriend, while confessing how much she misses Woodley and hopes they'll spend more time together over the summer.

In part: "I just cant stand being back here in prison and when I think of that wonderful time I had with you my last night it just makes it worse – You should have seen what happened when I got home – There was Ber which amazed me no end as I'd said goodbye to him – Sun & Mon & then Tues on the beach – That isn't all – He was sitting in the den & Lee didn't know he was there & she charged in in her slip with nothing on and her hair up & was bustling around the drawers for hours until he finally coughed politely & she fled screaming out of the room & was still screaming when I got home –

I wished I could have stayed for hours & we could have listened to the Victrola while my head was spinning from that sherry which I think was straight alcohol –

I wish I could have seen you more & talked to you more this summer Woodleigh...Even though you write wonderful letters – its awfully hard to really keep in touch thru them – but I hope we can & I hope the summer after next we can do something gay together & I'll hope & pray you're not married by then."

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Lightly toned with smoothed folds and a few light stains. Mounting remnants at edges on verso.
