Description

Jacqueline Kennedy Autograph Letter Signed. Six pages, 6 x 9 inches (sight), Hot Springs, Virginia; [circa 1944-47]. Matted and framed alongside the original transmittal cover to an overall size of 29 x 21 1/2 inches. This charming letter to her best friend Woodley, signed "Jackie," offers a rare and intimate glimpse of Jacqueline Bouvier as a spirited teenager, years before she became First Lady. In a lively, distinctive voice, Jackie writes about boys, pokes fun at her "snippy & mean & sort of dumb" friends, and confides her sadness at Woodley's move to England. The letter reveals an early portrait of her wit, charm, and sharp eye for detail—already the hallmarks of a woman destined for history.

In part: "I adored your letter today and I'm praying this will get to you before you leave – You were so sweet to do all that about Buddy...Woodley please come back next summer. I know you & he would be so perfect together – you are so much alike & seem to have so much fun together & I want him to marry you terrifically –and that would keep you in Newport which I wouldn't mind a bit – You are the only girl who's written me & we really have things to say to each other...Wow this is practically a love letter – I wouldn't dare write anything this scorching ever to Buddy! & speaking of HIM – I'm not so sure I'm that mad about him any more – I know it's being away & I'm probably trying to stop it so I won't get hurt – but it will be years if ever – before I mean anything to him...

Do write just a postcard & tell me what your address will be in Eng. & I'll write you first & though it will seem awfully far away – with a great ocean between us – let's write a lot – I envy you in a way – because you are going to something new – & therefore exciting – even if it will be hard – You know so much more about things than I do – You lived so much more – traveling I guess & living with sophisticated people instead of homey little folks like mine!"

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Very lightly toned with smoothed folds; mounting remnants at edges of pages 2, 4, 5, and verso of transmittal cover. Minor wear to back of frame.
