Description

Jacqueline Kennedy Autograph Letter Signed Twice. Two pages, 6 1/4 x 9 inches (sight), no place; [circa 1944-47]. Matted and framed to an overall size of 13 1/4 x 16 inches. At the close of her Christmas vacation, Jacqueline Bouvier writes to her best friend, Woodley, eager for every bit of gossip from their Newport social circle. She writes about boys and dancing, while also urging Woodley to write to her stepbrother, Yusha Auchincloss. Spirited and engaging, it captures the distinctive voice and easy charm that would later captivate the nation.

In part: "I just this minute got your letter – It was nifty! I loved all the gossip – and now I've thought of hundreds of questions to ask you...

Has Yusha written you yet? He wrote me & said he was going to – & send you the pictures that he took at the end of the summer. You simply MUST WRITE BACK – wouldn't it be romantic? MY little brother is getting to be such a man of the world – AT LONG LAST!

...You are an incurable matchmaker. Did Alby really convince you that he was a noble soul & a 'swell guy' & that I was being very mean to him – How pathetic! Thou art gullible! Woodleigh L. I can just hear you telling him these horrid things...

What other girls from Newport were at the St. George's dance? – & who asked them? Is Vic Granger still there & did he have Corny up? I wish Mary Damon had come – because she probably would have told you lots of juice...Poor you – it will be a day's work to answer all these questions but you don't really have to, just write & I will revel in it! I'll underline the most important questions – Isn't that sweet of me.

1.) I danced with so & so / 2.) So & so from Newport was there / 3.) Vic had Corny up ETC / Love Woodleigh."

Signed, "Jackie."

In a postscript in the margins of the first page, Jackie continues: "P.S. Do you think we'll see each other before next summer? We simply have to! Will you be in NY this Xmas – You better be! Love again XO Jackie."

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Minor dampstaining to verso, affecting a few letters, but text remains legible. Mounting remnants at edges on verso.
