Description
"Too bad! Harry Truman"
Harry S. Truman Inscribed Photo Signed. In this fantastic, 10" x 8", black and white photograph, dated November 1948, shows President Truman, two days after the election, holding up a copy of the Chicago Daily Tribune who has run a banner headline incorrectly stating "Dewey Defeats Truman." Truman was returning to Washington from Missouri when he stepped to the rear of the train at St. Louis Union Station and was handed the paper. Across the newspaper, Truman has inscribed: "Too bad!" Bent inward slightly. Minor damage to upper right corner.Noted by some as the greatest presidential defeat in United States history, New York Governor Thomas Dewey was proclaimed the winner by polls and pundits before the election even began. Truman, however, scored a stunning defeat over his opponent on election night with an electoral win of 303 to 189. In the popular vote, he edged out Dewey by a mere three million votes.
Provenance: Forbes Collection, 2002.
