Description

"We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under Japanese control wherever situated..."

Harry S Truman and Douglas MacArthur Signed Japanese Instrument of Surrender. One page, 15 x 18.75 inches, [Tokyo Bay, Japan]; [September 2, 1945].

Japan's surrender to the Allied Powers aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, signed by President Harry S Truman and General Douglas MacArthur.

Print of page one of the "Instrument of Surrender" which bears the signatures of President Truman ("Harry S Truman") in Washington, D.C. and General Douglas MacArthur ("Douglas MacArthur"), who joined Admiral Chester Nimitz and others in Tokyo in endorsing the terms of Japan's capitulation on September 2, 1945.

For 1,361 days the United States and its allies fought the Empire of Japan to check that nation's aggression against Asia, Alaska, and island nations of the Pacific. The energies and lives of millions of fighting men and women, the labor of civilians, sacrifices of the material well-being of others, and the morally perilous choice to drop atomic bombs on Japanese cities finally turned the tide to end the war. It reads, in part: "We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, herby accept the provisions set forth in the declaration issued by the heads of the Governments of the United States, China and Great Britain on July 26, 1945, at Potsdam, and subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which four powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied Powers. We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under Japanese control wherever situated..."

This incredible historic document is accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA.

Condition: Lightly wrinkled and creased with one bumped corner. Minor scattered soiling with a few stray pencil marks, small, expert repair to top edge verso. War Department stamp to verso. Below Truman signature, "signed 3-31-65" has been expertly removed but remains visible under UV light. From the Melvin "Pete" Mark, Jr. Collection
