Description

Grover Cleveland Presidential Appointment Signed and countersigned by Secretary of War Daniel S. Lamont. One partially printed vellum page, 15.75" x 19.25", December 30, 1895, appointing the future deputy surgeon general to "Surgeon with the rank of Major". With military and patriotic vignettes and affixed with a dark blue War Department seal. With folds; fine.

More Information:

The appointment reads in part: "Edwin Fisher Gardner I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him Surgeon with the rank of Major in the service of the United States". Gardner served as a private during the Civil War. After his graduation in 1875 from Harvard with an M.D., he served as a surgeon in the military until his appointment in 1904 to Deputy Surgeon General of the United States.
