Description

George Washington Signed Society of the Cincinnati Membership Certificate Signed. One page, 20 ½ x 15 inches; Mount Vernon, Virginia; March 31, 1787. Issued to "David Olyphant, Esquire, Director of the Southern Hospitals of the United American States." Signed, "Go: Washington" as the Society's president and countersigned by Henry Knox ("Knox") as secretary.

David Olyphant immigrated to the Colonies from Scotland and set up a successful practice in Charleston. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, he received a commission as Director General of the Southern Hospitals. He served in that capacity until he was taken prisoner of war at Charleston in 1780.

A patriotic organization with strict entrance rules, the Society of the Cincinnati only allowed entrance to officers from the Continental and French armies who served at least three years or were officers at the time of the war's end. After that, membership was passed down to the eldest son. Washington was the Society's first president and Knox, who likely originated the concept of the Society, was its first secretary.

Condition: Toning and foxing throughout. A three-inch tear in the vellum at top left has been restored on verso.
