Description

George Washington: Signed Ship's Passport. Single sheet of vellum, 11.50" x 18.5", dated January 21, 1797. The passport was issued in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to "Ship Alligator, George W. Harris master or commander of the burthen of Two hundred thirty nine tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with Eleven men." Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. Floated in a recessed frame to an overall size of 18" x 25.25". The signatures are both clean and bold. Great visual appeal.
