Description

George Washington Military Signed Appointment. One partially printed page of vellum, 14.75" x 17.5", Philadelphia; March [illegible], 1793. Signed by Washington as President, appointing "Nanning J. Visscher...Ensign". Countersigned by Henry Knox as Secretary of War at the lower left. The document is decorated with an eagle at the top margin and a large military engraving at the bottom. Paper wafer seal intact at top left corner.

Together with a hand colored engraving entitled "Sacred to the Memory of the Illustrious Captain of Liberty General George Washington First President of the United States." The two sheets are framed together in a two window French mat to the overall size of 33.25" x 22".

Condition: The military appointment has been backed with a thick cardboard. The paper seal is cracked in places, and the document has multiple cracks and paper loss throughout. Washington's signature is free of cracks but is slightly faded. Toning and soiling throughout. Severe dampstaining to the other sheet.
