Description

George Washington Military Discharge Signed "Go Washington". Two partially printed pages, front and back, 8" x 13", "Headquarters", Newburgh, New York; June 8, 1783. On April 9, 1783, the official end of the hostilities between Britain and America was announced to all regiments of the Continental Army surrounding Newburgh. This document signed by Washington, reads in part: "These are to CERTIFY that the bearer hereof Isaac Osterhout, Soldier in the first New York Regiment, Having faithfully served the United States seven years and being enlisted for the War only, is hereby DISCHARGED from the American Army. Given at HEADQUARTERS the 8th day of June 1783 by his Excellency's Command." Below, the document states: "The above Isaac Osterhout has been honored with the BADGE OF MERIT for seven years of faithful service." The document is countersigned by John Trumbull as General Secretary. With docketing along both vertical margins. On verso, there is a record of a transference of land from Isaac Osterhout to Henry Platnor and his Heirs.

On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the American Revolution and officially setting boundaries. George Washington resigned his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1783. Six years later, he would become the first President of the United States.

Condition: The document has been professionally restored with small strips of archival material on verso. Flattened folds, with small edge tears and small holes at some fold creases. Toning and foxing throughout. Uneven edges, else good.
