Description
George Washington Letter Signed "Go. Washington". One page with address cover (now detached), 6.75" x 11.75", "Headquarters"; December 20, 1779. A letter written to General Edward Hand, granting him a leave of absence to tend to a family matter. Reads in full:"The peculiar circumstances of your family induce me, the inconvenient or sever at accounts, to permit you visiting them immediately. I have to request your return as soon as you can possibly make it convenient. Almost the whole of the General Officers having occasion to claim the same indulgence, will leave me in a manner destitute of assistance should our affairs require either offensive or defensive operations. I hope you will find Mrs. Hand better than you expect."
Washington's words may have been somewhat prophetic, as just six days later, British General Clinton sailed from New York, heading for Charleston, South Carolina with 8,000 men. He would arrive on February 1, 1779, and soon began the attack on Charleston. Edward Hand (1744-1802) was an Adjutant General in the Continental Army and fought at the siege of Yorktown.
Condition: Usual mail folds, with toning throughout and darker toning at the edges. There are dark spots of soiling or foxing on the front and more on the verso of the addressed page. A tear is present along the top left vertical edge. A tear at the center of the letter has been professionally repaired and minimally affects the text. There is paper loss on the address page due to the seal being broken, with two small strips of archival tape on verso, which stabilize tears. Mounting residue on both pages on verso.
