Description
George Washington Document Signed. One page, recto and verso, 5.25" x 7.75", Georgetown; August 1, 1785. A manuscript bill for bar iron purchased "for use of the Potowmack Company" totaling £45.76, which is signed on verso acknowledging that payment had been received. Signed, "Go: Washington." It is countersigned by several significant figures in early American history, including Thomas S. Lee, John Fitzgerald, M. Johnston, and George Gilpin. Lee, Fitzgerald, and Gilpin were all close friends of Washington and worked with him at the Potomac Company. The Potomac Company was formed in 1784 to help facilitate navigation and trade along the Potomac River to benefit both Virginia and Maryland and aid in western expansion. It was responsible for the Patowmack Canal and several skirting canals, which succeeded in opening the river up for bulk goods. The company was taken over by the Chesapeake and Ohio Company in 1828.
Lee (1745-1819) was the second State Governor of Maryland and delegate of Maryland in the Congress of the Confederation. Fitzgerald (d.1799) was a lieutenant colonel and aide-de-camp to Washington. He was injured at the Battle of Monmouth but went on to serve as the mayor of Alexandria in 1783, before becoming a director with Washington on the Potomac River Canal after the war. Gilpin (1740-1813) worked as a wheat merchant before the Revolutionary War and became a colonel in the Fairfax County militia. He was also an aide to Washington and served with him at the Battle of Germantown. After the war, Gilpin worked as a Postmaster of Alexandria, judge of the Orphans' Court, and a commissioner working with the Potomac Company. He served as an honorary pallbearer at Washington's funeral.
