Description
George Washington Document Signed "G. Washington." One page, 19.5" x 13.5", Mount Vernon, Virginia, October 31, 1785. For strict accuracy we must note that Washington's signature has been enhanced on this document. This document announces William Butler as a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. The Society of the Cincinnati is a patriotic organization with strict entrance rules; only officers from the Continental or French armies who had served three years, or were officed at the time of the war's end, were allowed entrance. After that, membership was passed down to the eldest son. The Society is named after the Roman farmer Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus, who took complete control of Rome during a polemic emergency, and once the war was over he returned control to the Senate and went back to his farm. The motto of the Society reflects this tradition, "He gave up everything to serve the Republic." This gorgeous document is signed by George Washington who served as the society's first president and Henry Knox, Secretary of the society and United States Secretary of War.The document is in Fine condition; the vignettes look as if they were new, the entire document has been linen backed some time ago and is well preserved; some fraying of the linen is present.
