Franklin Pierce Letter Signed to Secretary of War Joel Roberts Poinsett. One page, 7.75" x 10", Washington, December 5, 1837. Pierce, the fourteenth president, requests the appointment of Dr. William Mason of Bucksport, Maine, "Surgeon in the U. S. Army." Toned with usual folds; some chipping along the right border; fine.More Information:
Explaining the qualifications of Dr. Mason, Pierce writes, "Dr. Mason is a thoroughly educated Physician & skilful surgeon and a Gentleman of Excellent character." Pierce had "been acquainted with him several years and cheerfully recommended him. . . ."
