Two pages, 10.25" x 16.75", Washington, December 31, 1853, to Manuel Montt, "President of the Republic of Chile," expressing regret over the recall of "...Señor Don Manuel Carvallo, who has for some time past been accredited to this government as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary..." He affirm Carvallo's constant goal to "...uphold and promote the interest of his own country..." while gaining "...the respect and good will of this government." Countersigned by William L. Marcy as secretary of state. Smoothed folds, else fine.
