Description
Franklin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed "Franklin Pierce". Four pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8", Concord, New Hampshire; April 15, 1863. Writing to an unknown recipient, Pierce was responding to an inquiry about the discharge of a Lieutenant Edgerly. In part:"I can hardly realize now that such an act could be authenticated by a public record and above all that the President of the United States could have so far forgotten his duty and his dignity as to assail with false charges compiled with vulgar spirits more than 32 or so of the most worthy citizens of New Hampshire...Dispensation like this would be bad enough under the direction of intelligence & decency. What it is now I have no language to express".
Lieutenant Andrew Jackson Edgerly of the 4th New Hampshire Volunteers had been reported to the War Department after it was found out that he had not only voted on the Democratic ticket, but that he had also spread word to others to do the same. Edgerly was promptly discharged from the army in March 1863, under the charge of "circulating copperhead tickets, and doing all in his power to promote the success of the rebel cause in his State".* Edgerly had enlisted just 6 months earlier, on September 18, 1861, and likely saw no military action.

Condition: The letter bears the usual folds, very light soiling. Some weakness at folds, otherwise in fine condition.
