Franklin D. Roosevelt. Typed Letter Signed. One page 4to, State of New York, Executive Mansion, Albany, New York letterhead, with original transmittal envelope, while President-Elect of the United States, December 28, 1932, to Mr. William J. French of Newburgh, New York. FDR writes: "My dear Mr. French:/ I remember your father very well, of course, and you yourself when you were a small boy. I wish I could suggest something definite in regard to employment. May I suggest that you go over to Middletown and see Dr. Robert Woodman, Superintendent of Middletown State Hospital, and show him this letter. It is possible that they may have some work there. As you know, most State positions are under the civil service, but there is sometimes work for chauffeurs or messengers./ Very sincerely yours,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." A splendid personal letter evocative of America's great economic crisis before FDR started instituting New Deal reforms barely two months after this letter was written to Mr. French.
