Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt: Signed Appointment for Joseph Tumulty. One partially printed page, 23" x 19"; Washington, D.C.; March 20, 1935. Appoints Woodrow Wilson's former personal secretary, Joseph Patrick Tumulty, "a Member of the Thomas Jefferson memorial Commission established for the purpose of considering and formulating plans for designing and constructing a permanent memorial in the city of Washington, District of Columbia." Signed, "Franklin D Roosevelt," and countersigned by Cordell Hull as Secretary of State. With a blind-embossed paper seal of the United States at the lower left. Mounted to a board of equal size.The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Commission was created to oversee the planning and construction of what would become one of Washington's most significant monumental tributes. Tumulty, who had served as Wilson's close aide from his tenure as Governor of New Jersey through his presidency, remained an influential figure in Washington political circles for decades after Wilson left office.
Since its presentation, this appointment has been passed down through the Tumulty family until the present offering. An interesting association piece connecting the Wilson and Roosevelt eras through a central Washington insider.
Condition: Mounted to board; lightly toned with very minor mat burn. A few edge chips, mostly small, with one larger chip at the left edge. Overall very good.
Provenance: Joseph Patrick Tumulty; thence by descent and inheritance to our consignor.
