Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt Photograph Signed and Inscribed to Eleanor Roosevelt. A Bachrach studio portrait, 7.5" x 11.25". Signed beneath the image, "For E.R. with F.D.R.'s love. 30 January 1929." Presented on the eve of Roosevelt's inauguration as Governor of New York, the Tiffany style frame is engraved at top "To the First Lady of New York from"; and the sentiment ends at bottom: "Franklin D. Roosevelt / 1920 The Happiest Warrior 1929." The dates mark the year of his last political campaign before his bout with polio (1920 vice presidential nomination), and his victory of the Governor's office for a term beginning in 1929. "The Happiest Warrior" is a play on his predecessor Al Smith's nickname, "The Happy Warrior."The sides of the frame are adorned with engraved signatures of seven members of the "Cuff Link Gang", close associates of Roosevelt's that had worked on his unsuccessful campaign as the Democratic Vice-President in 1920: Marvin H. McIntyre, Stephen T. Early, Kirke L. Simpson, Charles H. McCarthy, Louis M Howe, Thomas Lynch, and Stanley Prenosil.
Condition: Slight toning to the photograph, with a few areas of surface chips, specifically affecting the image in the area of Roosevelt's arm. The frame is marked "Sterling 14"; with tarnishing to surface, and heavy wear and rubbing to verso. The frames stand is completely detached, but present.
