Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt Inscribed: D-Day Prayer. (Washington: U.S. Government Printing Office, December 1944), copy No. 60, 4 pages, hardbound, 7.25" x 10.25", with slip case. Inscribed "For Jim Barnes / Christmastide 1944 / from Franklin D Roosevelt". Roosevelt made his D-Day Prayer on June 6, 1944, and had a limited edition of it printed and bound to be given to friends at Christmas of that year. Only 100 copies were made, and this copy is number 60.As thousands of U.S. and Allied soldiers stormed the beaches at Normandy, Roosevelt addressed the nation over the radio, with a prayer that he had written himself. He cited the need for peace and the upcoming uncertainty, and entreated for both patience and resolve in the coming times. Roosevelt was well aware of the great risk that Operation Overlord entailed, and prayed for the troops across the ocean and for their families on the home front: "They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph... And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be".

He also was part of the Naval History Society with Roosevelt in 1917.
Condition: Light toning and soiling on cover of book and on inside page, else fine. Inscription is bold.
