Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt. Autograph note signed ("FDR."). 1 page, (5 x 8 inches), " R.M.S Aquitania", no date [circa 1931 or 1932], to "Mary." On "On Board The Cunard R.M.S Aquitania" bifolium stationery. Pencil annotation to recto which incorrectly posits that Mary was FDR's sister. Some soiling and foxing.

Roosevelt writes, in full:

"Dear Mary - Do come in after dinner - The crowd has gone. FDR."

While the note is undated, it almost certainly was written in 1931 or 1932, when Roosevelt, still Governor of New York, took two trips aboard the Aquitania. The first trip occurred in May 1931 when he traveled to Paris to retrieve his mother, the formidable Sara Delano Roosevelt, who had fallen ill with pneumonia while visiting the city. A year later, in May 1932, he sailed aboard the ship again while on vacation with his family. If it was penned during the 1932 voyage, it was written just a few months after he announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.
