Description

Dolley Madison Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 7.75", no place; February 5, 1838. Addressed to Madison's niece Caroline Hite, requesting she visit the former First Lady as she has been ill and confined to her home. It reads in full: "I shall take great pleasure in sending for you my sweet Caroline during your vacation, and your friend Anna shall be the pleasant messenger. I have been for the last ten days confined to my chamber with an oppressive cold, the continuance of which will account I hope to Miss English for my not taking advantage of an invitation to attend the very interesting examination of the 'Female Seminary' commencing this day." Signed, "D. P. Madison." Accompanied by a typed transcription and an engraving of Dolley Madison.

Condition: Separations at the folds and tears has been expertly repaired with archival tissue on the verso. Integral address leaf had separated and been likewise repaired. Unevenly toned.
