    Description
Bill Clinton comments on a girl and an early speech - "I'm nervous as Hell!"
Bill Clinton Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8.5" x 11", [Fort Robinson, North Little Rock, Arkansas], postmarked June 6, 1963, to Jim Case, with the transmittal envelope bearing the printed "American Legion, Arkansas Boys State" return address. Clinton has signed in the lower margin of the envelope, "Bill Clinton." He has signed the letter, "Bill."While attending the annual weeklong Arkansas Boys State during the summer before his senior high school year, Bill Clinton, writes this letter to high school friend Jim Case in full:
"Have found out Glenna Rose isn't to cute. I'll go with her though - hope she's fun & has a good personality. Tomorrow is my preliminary for Boys Nation. I've been working hard all week & I have a pretty good speech. I've got to go - the election party's tonight. See you Friday - say hello to the folks. Glad you & Janice are together.
P.S. - Obviously I'm nervous as Hell!"
While at Boys State, Clinton ran for one of only two positions to attend the prestigious Boys Nation later that summer in Washington, D.C. All candidates for the position gave speeches before the election, and Clinton, who had been "working hard all work," was, nevertheless, "nervous as Hell!" about giving his speech. (Though working hard, he apparently still found time to date Glenna Rose.) His hard work paid off and he won the second highest number of votes, thus securing a slot to attend Boys Nation. According to his autobiography, My Life, Clinton still has a copy of his speech which he now considers "unremarkable, except for a reference to the Little Rock Central High turmoil" (page 61). While at Boys Nation, the future president shook the hand of President Kennedy in the Rose Garden, an occurrence that impacted Clinton's life and was captured in a familiar photograph. This letter has the usual folds.
