Description

Attorney Benjamin Harrison Provides Assistance to an Individual Seeking Family Documents Lost in a Fire

Benjamin Harrison Autograph Letter Signed ("Benj. Harrison"). One page of a bifolium, 5 3/8 x 7 3/4 inches; "Law Office of Harrison, Hines & Miller," Indianapolis, Indiana; April 4, 1876.

Harrison offers to help a gentleman, James Edgerly, Esq. of Great Falls, New Hampshire, retain signatures from a manuscript collection lost in a house fire. In full:

"My dear Sir,

It would give me pleasure to comply with your request if it was in my power. I have myself but one document with my Grand F's signature & would not of course part with that. Nor do I know any member of the family who could supply you with an autograph. In the burning of the old house, a very large mess of papers was destroyed, & but little of value was saved.

Very truly yours
Benj Harrison."

Condition: Very good. Strengthened with an attached leaf of archival paper on the left edge. Flattened folds and a few creases along the right edge. Loss to left edge rebacked. Evenly toned slightly darker on bottom right corner.
