Description

Benjamin Harrison Autograph Letter Signed as President. One-page with integral blank on Executive Mansion letterhead, 4.75" x 8". Deer Park, Maryland; August 27, 1889. A letter to Samuel F. Miller, Justice of the Supreme Court, probably concerning a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

My dear Judge

Have you forgotten the request from me of you at Woodstock in July? I am still anxious to have suggestions from you.

Brewer, Hitchcock of St. Louis & Thomas of Detroit (Dist. Court) are men I do not know personally. You no doubt do.

I hope you have had a pleasant summer. Mine has been much broken up by travel and necessary work.

Kind regards to Mrs. Miller

Benj. Harrison

President Harrison visited Woodstock, New York, in July 1889 for a Fourth of July event in the company of Supreme Court Judge Samuel Freeman Miller (1816-1890). During their time together in Woodstock, Harrison asked Miller for suggestions regarding some matter, probably for names of potential candidates to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court resulting from the recent death of Justice Stanley Matthews, who had died the previous March. One of the names Harrison mentions in this letter, written in Deer Park, Maryland, where the Harrison family vacationed, is Brewer. In December 1899, Harrison appointed Judge David Josiah Brewer (1837-1910) of Kansas to fill the vacancy, which was quickly confirmed by the Senate.

Condition: Letter has one horizontal fold. Light mat burn and soiling. On the verso of the top of the letter are two small mounting remnants. The letter is accompanied by a photograph of Harrison.
